The Excellence in English program is designed to enhance students’ reading, writing and speaking in combination with each other for academic success.
Reading
In the reading component, students strengthen their reading strategies and note-taking with an emphasis on learning new vocabulary and use their reading to develop their writing and speaking skills. They learn to interpret, analyze, and think more deeply about different types of fiction and non-fiction texts. Picture books, chapter books, and novels will be assigned to students based on their reading and interest levels accompanied by work to be completed and assessed.
Writing
Students will be assigned short answer, creative, and essay writing to enhance their reading comprehension skills and make connections to themselves, other texts, and the world around them. They will learn to think about and write clear main points, as well as identify relevant evidence to support their ideas.
Speaking
The focus for speaking activities will be on expressing ideas and making presentations clearly and with impact. Students will strengthen their speaking, listening, and leadership skills, as well as their overall confidence.
